Intermodal / Containers
Container and intermodal operations involve transporting freight in standardized containers across multiple modes—truck, rail, and ocean—without handling the cargo itself during transfers. Motor carriers handle the drayage segment, moving containers between ports, rail yards, and customer facilities. These operations depend on Equipment Providers (EPs), who supply chassis and containers. To legally interchange this equipment, carriers must be registered with the Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA), which ensures compliance with operational and insurance standards.
UIIA participants must maintain specific insurance coverages, including Trailer Interchange Insurance (to cover non-owned trailers and chassis), Hired Auto Liability, and General Liability (to protect against bodily injury or property damage). To gain approval from EPs and avoid disruptions, it is highly recommended that carriers use insurance providers with an A- or better AM Best rating. This rating demonstrates financial strength and credibility, reducing the risk of delays or rejection when accessing intermodal equipment.
